(1798-1860)
American religious zealot and Zionist. He was born in Philadelphia and emigrated to Palestine, where he converted to Judaism. On his return to the US he was declared insane by a court, but successfully appealed against the decision. He returned to Jerusalem as Michael Boaz Israel and undertook propaganda campaigns against Christian missionary groups and on behalf of the agricultural colonization by Jews of Palestine. Many of his writings were published in the journal The Occident.
